In ancient times, people often looked up at the starry sky. Among the bright stars, Venus was extremely dazzling. It is not only the star that appears earliest and disappears latest on the horizon, but also a very legendary deity in Taoism.
Legend has it that Venus was originally transformed from a pure stream of golden qi between heaven and earth. Before the establishment of Taoism, Venus was a goddess dressed in yellow, wearing a cockscomb on her head and holding a pipa. The sound of her pipa can play the wonderful rhythm between heaven and earth and has magical power. Whenever she plays the pipa, the movement of the stars seems to be guided, and all things in the world will also undergo subtle changes. At that time, Venus was regarded as the star god in charge of disasters, diseases and wars.
Later, as Taoism gradually emerged, the image of Venus also slowly changed. As time went by, in the Song and Yuan dynasties, Venus was sometimes depicted as a male figure with a wife, and sometimes as a gentle female figure riding on a phoenix with a cockscomb. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Venus finally stabilized into an old man with white hair and a childlike face. Holding a horsetail whisk, he is elegant and lofty in divine nature.
Venus has an important position in the heavenly court. He often inspects the good and evil of the human world on behalf of the Jade Emperor. In the story of "Journey to the West", his role is deeply rooted in people's hearts. Before Sun Wukong made a scene in the Heavenly Palace, Venus went to Huaguo Mountain twice to recruit Sun Wukong. For the first time, he persuaded Sun Wukong to become the stable keeper in the heavenly court. For the second time, he proposed that Sun Wukong be made the Great Sage Equaling Heaven and manage the Peach Orchard. Although these two arrangements eventually caused some troubles, it can also be seen that as an envoy of the heavenly court, Venus has always been trying to solve problems in a peaceful way. On the journey of Tang Seng and his disciples to the west for scriptures, Venus also secretly helped them many times. For example, in the chapter "Rescued from the Tiger's Den by Venus", when Tang Seng reached the mountain ridge, all his attendants on the left and right were captured and eaten by monsters. Only Tang Seng was left because of his special status. When Tang Seng was extremely frightened, Venus appeared to comfort him and guided him to go to the Five Elements Mountain to rescue Sun Wukong who was suppressed.
In addition to these, Venus also predicted disasters on earth and reported them to the Jade Emperor. Legend has it that there was once a monster called "evil dragon" in Jiangnan, bringing disaster to the people. After Venus noticed it, he proposed to the Jade Emperor that Xu Xun, the reincarnated True Immortal of Yudong Cave, should slay the evil dragon to increase merit and ascend to immortality as soon as possible. The Jade Emperor listened to his suggestion and bestowed the magic sword for slaying demons, helping Xu Xun successfully slay the dragon and removing a great disaster for the human world. All of Venus's actions reflect his compassion and wisdom as a god and also leave a thick and colorful stroke in Taoist legends.
