In ancient times, at the foot of the serene and picturesque Qingyun Mountain, there stood an ancient Taoist temple known as Yunxiao Palace. This temple, with a long history and a thriving incense offering, was dedicated to the worship of deities, whose powers were said to be boundless. The headmaster of the temple was a Daoist priest, known as Master Xuanqing, a venerable man in his fifties, widely respected by all. He was often referred to as "Master Xuanqing" by the local people, and his name was synonymous with wisdom and divine insight.

Legend had it that when Master Xuanqing was young, he had devoted himself to the Taoist arts for many years, mastering numerous esoteric skills, particularly those related to the realm of the dead. Whenever the Ghost Festival arrived on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, or when widespread disasters occurred, people who had lost loved ones would seek him out to perform rituals to help those souls move on, resolve their grievances, and dissolve negative energies. His rituals were seen as the only hope for those whose families or villages were plagued by illness or misfortune.

One day, as Master Xuanqing was seated in quiet meditation in the temple, a disciple rushed in, out of breath. "Master, there's a woman named Li Yue who requests an audience. She asks for your help in performing a ritual for her family to resolve their vengeful spirits and debtor souls."

Master Xuanqing opened his eyes and raised an eyebrow. He had an instinctive feeling that this matter would not be simple. The ritual to release vengeful spirits and debtors was often tied to intricate karmic entanglements, and even a slight mistake could lead to further trouble. Master Xuanqing nodded and instructed, "Bring her in."

Soon, Li Yue was brought before the temple. She was a young woman, beautiful but clearly exhausted. Her face was pale, and her eyes reflected deep anxiety and weariness. She knelt before Master Xuanqing and, with tears streaming down her face, pleaded, "Master, please help me and my family. Recently, misfortune has befallen us. My father has fallen ill and is bedridden. My mother suddenly passed away. My brother lost both his legs in an accident. Our family no longer has any savings, and everyone is suffering. The people in the village say our family is cursed because of past grievances, and we are being punished for blood debts. Please, Master, perform a ritual to release our family from these spirits' wrath!"

Master Xuanqing sighed softly and asked, "Li Yue, what is the history of your family? What kind of past could have brought such calamity upon you?"

Through sobs, Li Yue recounted, "My family was once wealthy and respected. My grandfather was a successful businessman, but many years ago, he made a dishonest deal that led to the suicide of a man. Even though my grandfather tried to make amends by donating his wealth to charity, he was never able to gain the forgiveness of that man's spirit. Since then, our family has been haunted by the ghost of that merchant. My father, mother, and even I have all seen him in our dreams, demanding vengeance. Now, this misfortune has reached its peak. Please, Master, help us break this curse!"

Master Xuanqing listened silently for a while and then spoke in a calm voice, "Vengeful spirits and debtors are not merely the result of past wrongdoings. The souls of the deceased, when not properly appeased, can continue to wreak havoc on the living. To resolve this, we must understand the deeper cause of the grievance before we can truly free your family."

With that, Master Xuanqing stood and led Li Yue to a secluded forest behind the temple. There stood the ruins of an ancient Taoist shrine, hidden and mysterious. Master Xuanqing often performed secretive rituals there. He instructed Li Yue to wait as he began setting up the necessary ritual circle.

First, he took a black talisman and, with a series of precise hand gestures, lit it on fire, placing the burning talisman into the altar on the ground. He then used a string of five colored threads, weaving them into a circle to form a grand ritual array. As the ritual took shape, the energy in the air shifted, becoming dense and heavy. Master Xuanqing closed his eyes and began reciting the ancient Supernatural Sutra.

Suddenly, a faint, mournful wail echoed through the air, and an ethereal figure appeared before the altar. It was a pale man in tattered clothing—the very merchant whom Li Yue's grandfather had wronged.

The ghost of the merchant spoke in a sorrowful tone, "I have long known of the grievances within your family. But even after my death, I have not found peace. Your grandfather promised to make restitution for my death, but he never fulfilled his vow. I died with bitterness and resentment, and it has carried on with me into the afterlife. I do not seek revenge, only that my soul may find rest and that your family can finally be freed from this curse."

Master Xuanqing's eyes glowed with a subtle light as he continued his incantation. A divine energy surged from his words, flowing toward the merchant's spirit. As the ritual intensified, the ghost of the merchant began to fade, his form becoming translucent and increasingly faint, until he disappeared entirely.

Li Yue gazed in awe, tears of gratitude filling her eyes as she knelt to thank the Master. "Thank you, Master. Thank you for saving us!"

Master Xuanqing nodded gently and replied, "The grievance has been resolved, and the curse upon your family has been lifted. But remember, karma is not so easily undone. You must live with integrity and kindness from now on, or the cycle may repeat itself."

Li Yue nodded, deeply moved. She left the temple with a newfound sense of peace, feeling as though a heavy burden had been lifted from her shoulders. Her family’s troubles began to subside as well. Her father's condition improved, her mother’s sudden death was revealed to be an accident, and her brother, after much treatment, regained the use of his legs. The villagers, seeing the miraculous turn of events, attributed the change to divine intervention, and Li Yue's family slowly returned to their peaceful life.

Master Xuanqing's reputation grew even more widespread after this successful ritual. Each year, during the Ghost Festival, people came from far and wide to seek his help in performing similar rituals for lost souls, dispelling negative energy, and resolving the grievances of the deceased. Master Xuanqing, though, never sought glory. He continued to perform his work quietly, always ready to help those in need, teaching others about the Taoist wisdom of compassion, balance, and the importance of resolving karmic debts.
