Once upon a time, there was a small town where a wealthy merchant named Wang Fu lived. Wang Fu was extremely rich, but he was also extremely stingy and often resorted to unscrupulous means to seek profits. He bullied the common people, deducted the wages of his workers, and frequently cheated in business dealings.
Outside the town, there was a small Taoist temple where a young Taoist priest named Qingfeng resided. Priest Qingfeng was kind-hearted and often offered free medical consultations to the townspeople and distributed porridge to relieve the poor. After hearing about Wang Fu's evil deeds, he sighed inwardly and decided to find an opportunity to enlighten him.
One day, Wang Fu went out with his servants to collect rent. When passing by the Taoist temple, Priest Qingfeng stood at the entrance of the temple, with his hands clasped together, and said, "Benefactor, it is our fate to meet today. I have something to tell you. Wealth is impermanent, and good and evil will always be rewarded accordingly. You have done many unjust things, and I'm afraid misfortune will befall you." After hearing this, Wang Fu laughed scornfully and said, "You Taoist priest, don't try to frighten me with such dire warnings. All my wealth has been earned through my own hard work. What's wrong with that?" With that, he led his servants and walked away haughtily.
Not long after that, the small town was hit by a rare flood. The flood rushed in violently, submerging many houses and fields. The common people fled to higher ground one after another. However, Wang Fu was reluctant to leave because he couldn't bear to part with his household belongings. Most of his servants, who had only followed him for the sake of money, saw the situation was not good and scattered in all directions.
Wang Fu was trapped in his own attic, terrified. As the water level continued to rise, he felt desperate. Just then, Priest Qingfeng appeared, rowing a small boat. Seeing this, Wang Fu hurriedly called for help. Looking at him, Priest Qingfeng said calmly, "Benefactor, do you now understand that wealth is like a passing cloud in the face of disaster, while acts of kindness in ordinary days can save a life in times of danger?" Wang Fu's face was full of shame as he said, "Reverend, I was wrong. If I can survive this disaster, I will surely reform myself." Priest Qingfeng nodded slightly and helped him onto the boat.
After the flood, Wang Fu indeed turned over a new leaf. He began to generously help the townspeople rebuild their homes, apologized one by one to those he had once bullied, and also donated a large amount of money to repair the Taoist temple and relieve the poor. Gradually, the small town regained its vitality, and Wang Fu transformed from a despised villain into a respected and kind person. This story embodies the Taoist concept of good and evil, believing that good and evil deeds in the world will bring corresponding results. Good deeds will be rewarded with good, and evil deeds will be punished. It reminds people to uphold a kind heart, do more good deeds, and stay away from evil deeds, so that they can walk more steadily and smoothly on the path of life, in harmony and accordance with the justice of the Tao.
