At the foot of a serene mountain in the ancient East, there was a small town filled with the smoke of daily life. In this town lived a young man named Lin Yu. His family was poor, and to make a living, he had to climb mountains and cross ridges every day to gather medicinal herbs and then sell them at the market. Life was extremely hard for him, and he often worried about having enough to eat. His days were like a sky overcast by dark clouds, without a glimmer of light.
One day, while in a corner of the market, Lin Yu happened to hear others talking about the wonderful wisdom of "Taoist Fengshui". The words seemed to hold a mysterious power that could turn things around and change one's fate. Lin Yu's heart was stirred, and he immediately decided to visit a famous Taoist priest in a mountain Taoist temple, hoping to get a good recipe for improving his fortune from him.
The Taoist temple was hidden deep in the misty mountain forest. Lin Yu followed the winding mountain path, cutting through thorns and bushes, and after much hardship, finally arrived at the temple. The temple was solemn and imposing. The vermilion gate was tightly closed, and the door knockers were mottled with patina, as if telling the long history of the years. Lin Yu, filled with awe, gently knocked on the door.
After a while, the door slowly creaked open, and a young Taoist attendant appeared. Lin Yu quickly explained his purpose, and the attendant led him through the quiet courtyard to the Taoist priest's quiet room. The Taoist priest had white hair, a peaceful face, and deep, serene eyes, like an unfathomable ancient pool, as if he could see through the vanity and truth of all things in the world.
Lin Yu respectfully told the Taoist priest about his hardships and confusion, speaking earnestly, with his eyes full of the longing to change his fate. The priest nodded slightly and said softly, "There's no need to rush to seek wealth. This is a worldly obsession. If the heart is restless, wealth will be like floating clouds, elusive. Only when the heart is calm can one perceive the subtleties of business opportunities in the noisy world. 'Wait patiently for the clouds to clear and the moon to shine.' This is the ultimate truth in the world and the essence of Taoist wisdom."
Lin Yu seemed to understand something, though not completely. But he had an inexplicable belief in his heart and decided to follow the Taoist priest's teachings and cultivate his inner self. When he returned home, he was no longer as anxious as before, no longer greedy for immediate petty gains. Every morning, he would sit quietly in meditation in his small courtyard, getting rid of the distractions in his mind, letting his thoughts flow slowly like a clear stream.
When he went into the mountains to gather medicinal herbs again, his state of mind was completely different. In the past, he had always been in a hurry to look for those medicinal herbs that were easy to pick and abundant. Now, however, he could calm down and carefully distinguish the growth habits and medicinal values of each herb. He patiently dug out those high-quality and excellent medicinal herbs, and he didn't flinch even if the process was tough.
When he returned home to sort out the medicinal herbs, he no longer did it perfunctorily as before. Instead, he carefully selected and meticulously processed them. Every leaf of the medicinal herbs was cleaned thoroughly by him, and every stem was neatly arranged. He carefully classified, dried, and processed the medicinal herbs, striving to maximize the efficacy of each herb.
At first, the customers at the market didn't notice Lin Yu's changes, and his business was still sluggish. But Lin Yu wasn't discouraged by this. He firmly believed that as long as he adhered to the inner peace and consistently provided high-quality medicinal herbs, he would eventually be recognized by everyone.
Time passed quietly, with spring giving way to autumn and cold replacing heat. Lin Yu's perseverance and efforts gradually paid off. Some customers who had bought his medicinal herbs before found that after taking his herbs, their illnesses were cured faster and their bodies recovered better. These customers began to spread the word, praising the miraculous effects and excellent quality of Lin Yu's medicinal herbs.
As a result, more and more people came to him out of admiration, and Lin Yu's herbal stall gradually became lively. The shopkeepers of the medicine shops who had once looked down on him also came to negotiate cooperation with him one after another. Lin Yu's business was like a bamboo shoot breaking through the ground, rising steadily and growing stronger under the nourishment of spring rain.
As his business continued to expand, Lin Yu wasn't dazzled by the immediate gains. He still maintained his inner peace and followed the Taoist teachings, operating his business with integrity, treating everyone equally regardless of age or status. He used his savings to open a herbal medicine shop in the town. There were many kinds of medicinal herbs in the shop, all of excellent quality and at fair prices.
Lin Yu's herbal medicine shop not only provided the residents of the town with high-quality medicinal herbs and medical services but also attracted many merchants from other places to come and purchase. His name also became famous in the surrounding areas along with the spread of his medicinal herbs. Eventually, he became a well-known herbal merchant in the local area, and his story became a much-told tale among the people in the town.
The Taoist thought contained herein is like the bright moon hanging high in the sky, illuminating the confused minds of people in the mortal world. "Wait patiently for the clouds to clear and the moon to shine." This is not just a passive waiting for fate but also a kind of spiritual practice of adhering to inner peace in difficulties and not being swayed by external temptations. In the Taoist concept, everything in the world has its own laws and destinies, just like the movement of the sun, moon, and stars, and the alternation of the four seasons, which cannot be forcibly changed.
Wealth and fortune are not obtained through blind pursuit and greedy acquisition but through self-cultivation of the inner self and the improvement of moral character under the premise of conforming to the laws of nature. It's like a sharp sword that has been sharpened and gradually emits a dazzling light in the precipitation of time. When a person can get rid of the restlessness and distractions in his heart and face all kinds of challenges and opportunities in life with a calm and clear heart, he will be in harmony with the way of heaven and earth and naturally be able to find a turning point in difficulties and see the light of hope in the darkness.
Throughout history, many examples can prove this truth. In the past, there was Jiang Taigong, who was over seventy years old and fished by the Wei River. Although he was in a difficult situation, his heart was as calm as still water, and he was not bewitched by worldly fame and fortune. He held on to his beliefs and talents and waited patiently for the right moment. Eventually, he met King Wen of Zhou and assisted him in establishing the great cause of the Zhou Dynasty, leaving a glorious name in history.
Another example is Zhuge Liang, who tilled the land in Nanyang, living a simple life with lofty aspirations and a peaceful heart. In his thatched cottage, he devoted himself to studying astronomy, geography, military strategies, and cultivated his inner self to improve himself. It wasn't until Liu Bei visited him three times that he came out of the mountains. With his outstanding wisdom and abilities, he maneuvered freely in the chaotic times and achieved great undertakings.
In today's noisy and bustling world, people are often burdened by fame and fortune, with restless hearts, like duckweed without roots, drifting with the current. The Taoist thought of "Wait patiently for the clouds to clear and the moon to shine" is like a clear spring that can wash away the dust from people's hearts, allowing people to find a peaceful haven in their busy lives, adhere to their true selves and kindness, and face the ups and downs of life with a calm and composed attitude.
