In an era where prosperity and turmoil coexisted, there was a scholar named Lin Yu. He came from a scholarly family and had been immersed in books since childhood. With lofty aspirations in his heart, he longed to go to the capital to take the imperial examinations one day, so that he could have his name on the golden roll, serve the country with his talent and learning, and bring honor to his ancestors.
Thus, on a morning when the sun had just risen, Lin Yu set out on the long journey to the capital for the imperial examinations with a simple backpack on his back. Along the way, he endured hardships, traveling by day and lodging by night, his heart full of longing and anticipation for the future. However, fate played a cruel joke on him when he was passing through a remote mountain forest.
In the mountain forest, a group of bandits suddenly emerged like ghosts. They all looked fierce and were armed with sharp knives, surrounding Lin Yu tightly. The bandits mercilessly robbed him of all his money and beat him black and blue. Lin Yu fought back vigorously, but outnumbered, he was badly beaten by the bandits. He fell to the ground, his clothes torn and his body covered in blood. He watched helplessly as the bandits left triumphantly, leaving him alone and helpless in this desolate wilderness, filled with despair.
After a long while, Lin Yu endured the pain and struggled to stand up. Step by step, he moved forward. There was only one belief in his heart, which was to survive and continue on his way to the capital. Just when he could hardly hold on any longer, a Taoist temple appeared in front of his eyes. The gate of the temple was half-open, as if opening a glimmer of hope for this down-and-out man.
Lin Yu dragged his heavy body into the Taoist temple. The abbot of the temple was sweeping the courtyard at that time. Seeing Lin Yu in such a miserable state, a trace of pity rose in his heart. The abbot quickly stepped forward, helped Lin Yu into the inner room of the temple, and ordered his disciples to prepare hot water and herbs to carefully treat his wounds. Under everyone's care, Lin Yu's injuries gradually stabilized.
During the days when he was recovering from his injuries, Lin Yu, feeling grateful, took the initiative to offer to help the temple sort out its scriptures to repay everyone for saving his life. Seeing his sincere attitude, the abbot nodded in approval. So, every day, Lin Yu immersed himself in the scripture storage pavilion of the Taoist temple, accompanied by the ancient Taoist scriptures.
He opened one after another of the yellowed scriptures. The words on them seemed to carry a mysterious power that deeply attracted him. He read the Taoist teaching that "The highest good is like water. Water benefits all things without contending with them." and understood that in dealing with others, one should be as gentle and humble as water, not compete with others for superiority, but be able to nourish all things silently and achieve great undertakings. He also saw the saying "Attain the utmost emptiness, preserve the utmost stillness. While all things are stirring, I watch them return." and grasped that when facing the distractions and temptations of the world, one should keep one's inner self empty and calm, adhere to firm beliefs, so that one could perceive the essence and laws of all things and not be deceived by appearances. And the saying "Misfortune is where fortune depends, and fortune is where misfortune lurks." made him understand the principle that misfortune and fortune are interdependent. In a difficult situation, one should not despair because a turning point might be hidden within it; and in good times, one should not be complacent but always be vigilant against potential crises.
Lin Yu eagerly absorbed the wisdom nutrients from the Taoist scriptures. These principles were like bright lights, gradually illuminating his inner world, making his heart, which had become impetuous and confused after encountering the bandits, find its direction again and become calm and firm.
Time passed quickly, and Lin Yu finally recovered from his injuries. He bid farewell to the abbot and the disciples of the Taoist temple, filled with gratitude and new insights, and set off again on his journey to the capital for the imperial examinations. Along the way, his state of mind was completely different from before. He was no longer anxious or eager but moved forward with a peaceful and calm attitude.
Finally, he arrived in the capital and entered the examination hall smoothly. When the examination questions were presented before his eyes one by one, he couldn't help but be greatly amazed. Many of the questions on the examination papers were closely related to the Taoist principles he had grasped while sorting out the scriptures in the Taoist temple. Those questions about how to cultivate one's moral character, govern the country, and deal with the changes in the world were like old friends already familiar to Lin Yu.
He recalled that "governing by non-interference" in Taoism didn't mean doing nothing but conforming to the laws of nature and not interfering recklessly, allowing things to develop naturally; "the soft overcomes the hard" inspired him that when dealing with problems, one should not always use tough means. Sometimes, using softness to overcome hardness could achieve better results; "Tao follows nature" reminded him that all things in the world had their own operating rules, and people should respect and follow these rules to achieve harmonious coexistence.
A surge of excitement and self-confidence welled up in Lin Yu's heart. He picked up his pen, and his thoughts flowed like a spring. He wrote down his insights and understandings on the examination paper in a smooth and flowing manner. His essays were well-structured, with unique viewpoints, and between the lines, not only showed his solid academic foundation but also permeated the profound connotations of Taoist wisdom.
On the day when the examination results were announced, the crowd was bustling. Lin Yu stood under the list, nervously and expectantly looking for his name. When he finally saw the two characters "Lin Yu" hanging high at the top of the list, surrounded by the word "Number One Scholar", tears of excitement glistened in his eyes. He knew deeply that from the down-and-out situation when he encountered the bandits to the glorious moment of winning the first place in the imperial examinations, it was the experience in the Taoist temple that had completely changed his fortune.
The wisdom of Taoism was like the brightest star in the night sky, illuminating his way forward when he was in the dark and difficult situation. It was the principles of dealing with others and the world that he had grasped from the Taoist scriptures that enabled him to perform exceptionally well in the examination hall and stand out. This honor belonged not only to him personally but also to that Taoist temple that had given him shelter and inspired his wisdom.
When Lin Yu returned to his hometown in fine clothes, he deliberately made a detour to visit that Taoist temple. Carrying rich gifts and with an extremely respectful heart, he expressed his gratitude to the abbot and the disciples of the Taoist temple. Standing in the courtyard of the Taoist temple, looking at the familiar grass and trees, he said with deep emotion, "This Taoist temple is the place where I was reborn. The wisdom of Taoism is the key to the turn of my fate. I will keep it in my heart and practice the teachings of Taoism all my life. With kindness as the foundation and wisdom in dealing with the world, I hope that, as advocated by Taoism, I can bring more blessings to the world."
Since then, Lin Yu's story has spread widely in the local area. People were full of awe and longing for the magic and wisdom of Taoism while marveling at it. Many students began to follow Lin Yu's example. Besides studying books diligently, they also started to study Taoist scriptures, hoping to draw inspiration and strength from them to change their own fates and pursue their own glories. And that Taoist temple, because of Lin Yu's story, became even more prosperous in terms of incense offerings and became a sacred place in the hearts of many Taoism seekers, continuing to inherit the wisdom and compassion of Taoism and lighting up the beacon of hope for everyone who was lost and wandering on the path of fate.
