In the distant ancient times, there was a poor farmer living in a remote small village. Every day, he toiled hard from the break of dawn until sunset, yet the hardships of life always lingered around him. His family often had insufficient food and shabby clothes. One day, under the old tree at the entrance of the village, he heard an old man who had just returned from his travels talk about a place in the distant valley that was like a fairyland called "Taohuayuan". It was said that the land there was fertile, rich in products, and the people lived a prosperous life. Gold and silver treasures seemed inexhaustible, and wealth flowed continuously like the clear springs in the mountains.
Instantly, a flame of hope was kindled in the farmer's heart. Eager to change the fate of himself and his family, he resolutely decided to set out on a journey to find Taohuayuan. He put on his simple backpack, which contained some dry rations and a worn-out hoe, and then set off in the direction pointed by the old man.
He walked along the winding paths, passed through thick forests, climbed over steep mountains, and waded through rapid rivers. Along the way, he endured countless hardships and difficulties, sleeping in the open and eating simple meals. On a scorching afternoon when the sun was high in the sky, when he was exhausted and reached the foot of a mountain, he met a Taoist priest wearing a Taoist robe.
The Taoist priest had a thin face, but his eyes were deep and bright, exuding an otherworldly air. He stood on a huge rock by the roadside, seeming to blend in with the surrounding nature. Seeing the farmer's tired face and the perseverance in his eyes, the Taoist priest nodded slightly and said, "Young man, where are you going?" The farmer quickly stepped forward, saluted respectfully, and said, "Reverend, I've heard that there is a Taohuayuan in the distance where people live a prosperous life. I want to find it, hoping to change my poor life."
The Taoist priest smiled gently and said, "Do you know that the wealth of Taohuayuan lies not in an external place but in inner peace and wisdom? People in this world often pursue external fame, fortune, and status, but they neglect the cultivation of their inner selves. Little do they know that if they can explore the 'Taohuayuan' within their hearts and let their souls be nourished and peaceful, fortune will come quietly like spring flowers blooming."
After hearing this, the farmer was full of doubts. He scratched his head and asked, "Reverend, I don't quite understand what you mean. I just want to find that prosperous place and earn more money so that my family can live a good life. How can inner peace and wisdom bring fortune?"
The Taoist priest raised his head slightly, looked into the distance, and said slowly, "Let me tell you a story. There was once a young scholar who was determined to pass the imperial examinations to obtain wealth and status. He studied day and night but neglected the cultivation of his moral character and the balance of his inner self. On the path of the imperial examinations, he encountered repeated setbacks because he was too eager for quick success and was full of anxiety and restlessness, which made it difficult for him to display his true talents in the examination hall. Later, he met a wise man who told him that he should cultivate his mind first, make his heart as calm as still water, so that he could have a clear understanding of worldly affairs and make correct decisions. The scholar followed the wise man's teachings and began to learn self-cultivation. Besides reading, he studied calligraphy, painting, and discussed poetry and Taoism with his friends. Gradually, he cultivated a peaceful state of mind and profound wisdom. When he entered the examination hall again, he was calm in his state of mind and his thoughts flowed freely. Finally, he passed the examinations with flying colors. After becoming an official, he won the love of the people and the appreciation of his superiors with his wisdom and just moral character, and wealth followed. This is the principle that inner peace and wisdom bring fortune."
The farmer listened thoughtfully and seemed to begin to understand a little. The Taoist priest then continued, "In Taoist thought, 'Tao' is the source of all things and also the source of wealth. And inner peace and wisdom are the keys to conforming to 'Tao'. When a person's heart is full of greed, anger, and ignorance, he goes against 'Tao', and wealth will stay away from him. On the contrary, if one can treat all things in the world with a peaceful heart and use wisdom to manage life, he can follow the laws of 'Tao', and wealth will naturally gather around him."
After thinking for a moment, the farmer said, "Reverend, then how can I find the 'Taohuayuan' within my heart?" The Taoist priest smiled and said, "You can start from the little things in daily life. For example, when farming, feel the power of the land with your heart, be grateful for the gifts of nature, instead of just complaining about the hardships of labor; when getting along with neighbors, be more tolerant and friendly and less fussy and quarrelsome; when facing difficulties in life, stay calm and optimistic and use wisdom to find solutions. In this way, slowly, your heart will become peaceful and full of wisdom, and fortune will come unexpectedly."
The farmer bowed deeply to the Taoist priest and said, "Thank you for your teachings, Reverend. I understand. I won't blindly pursue the Taohuayuan in the distance anymore. Instead, I will plant the seeds of 'Taohuayuan' in my heart first."
Since then, the farmer returned to his own village. He no longer worked with anxiety as before but with a grateful and peaceful heart. He carefully cultivated his land, tried new farming methods, and shared his experience with the villagers. Everyone helped each other, and the atmosphere in the village became more harmonious. He also took advantage of his spare time to learn some knowledge and skills to improve his wisdom.
Gradually, the farmer found that the harvest of his crops was getting better and better, and his family's life was gradually improving. He used his surplus grain to exchange for some daily necessities and also began to try some small businesses, such as making some handicrafts and selling them at the market. Because his handicrafts were exquisitely made and he was honest and kind, his business was booming.
As time passed, the farmer's wealth continued to accumulate, and he became a wealthy person in the village. However, he didn't forget the Taoist priest's teachings. He still maintained inner peace and humility and often helped the poor families in the village, sharing his wealth and knowledge with everyone. His kind deeds won the respect and praise of the villagers, and everyone called him the lucky star of the village.
And the farmer also knew deeply that all this wealth and happiness were not because he had found the legendary Taohuayuan but because he had built his own "Taohuayuan" deep in his heart. In this inner "Taohuayuan", peace and wisdom were the never-drying clear springs that continuously nourished his life, attracting fortune like colorful butterflies fluttering around him. His story spread in the surrounding villages and became a vivid example of Taoist thoughts on wealth, making more people understand that true wealth is not just the accumulation of materials but the abundance and peace of the inner self, and a wise life that goes along with "Tao".
