In the long history of the Chinese nation, the veins of commerce were like intertwined threads, connecting countless towns and villages, nourishing all aspects of people's lives. The protagonist of the story is a merchant named Zhao Fu. He came from a poor family and had known the hardships of life since childhood. In order to provide a better life for his family, he embarked on the journey of traveling around and doing business at a young age.
The road Zhao Fu traveled was not an easy one. At that time, the country had just stabilized, and although the situation was gradually becoming more peaceful, there were still bandits rampant in remote areas, and the public security was worrying. He traveled between various towns all year round, living a life of hardship, constantly driving his freight carriage. The wheel tracks extended continuously on the winding dirt roads. Every trip was a game against unknown risks. He not only had to deal with unpredictable market conditions but also had to be constantly vigilant against thieves and robbers that might emerge from the shadows. If he was even slightly careless, he might lose everything and even endanger his life.
Once, Zhao Fu was full of joy as he drove a carriage loaded with carefully selected goods to a prosperous border town to sell. The carriage was full of exquisite silk, delicate porcelain, and rare spices. He had spent a lot of effort and traveled all over the place to gather these goods, hoping to sell them at a good price in the border town's market, buy some new clothes for his family, and repair his dilapidated house. However, when he reached a desolate valley, the sky gradually darkened, and the surroundings were so quiet that it was frightening. Only the sounds of horse hooves and the rolling of wheels echoed in the valley. Suddenly, a group of fierce robbers rushed out from the dense forest beside the road. Each of them held sharp weapons, and their eyes glinted with greedy fierceness as they surrounded his carriage.
Zhao Fu was extremely terrified and lamented his misfortune in his heart. He knew that he was in great danger this time. But even so, in order to protect his goods, he pretended to be calm and tried to bargain with the robbers, begging them to let him go. However, how could the robbers give up easily? Seeing that Zhao Fu refused to submit, they brandished their weapons and approached him step by step. At this critical moment, a melodious flute sound came from the depths of the valley. The flute sound was ethereal and gentle, as if it had an invisible power that made everyone present stunned.
The robbers showed a look of fear on their faces, as if they were afraid of something. After looking at each other a few times, they fled in a hurry and disappeared into the forest, leaving only a bewildered Zhao Fu. Before he could recover, an old man in a Taoist robe slowly walked out from the forest. He had white hair, a thin face, but an otherworldly temperament. His eyes were deep and gentle, as if he could understand all things in the world.
Zhao Fu quickly stepped forward and knelt down to express his gratitude: "Thank you, Taoist priest, for saving my life. If it weren't for your timely appearance, I'm afraid I would have died here today." The old man slightly raised his hand to signal him to get up and said softly, "Don't mention it, donor. Our encounter today is also fate. Seeing that you are a merchant traveling around and working hard, you must often encounter such dangerous situations, right?" Hearing this, Zhao Fu's eyes turned red, and he nodded repeatedly, pouring out all the hardships and difficulties he had experienced in business over the years.
After listening, the old man showed a look of pity and took out a talisman from his arms and handed it to Zhao Fu, saying, "This talisman is a Taoist object. It says 'Suppress Evil, Expel Ghosts, Protect the Body and Ensure Well-being'. You should wear it close to your body. When you travel outside in the future, it may keep you safe. But you must remember that the spiritual power of this talisman comes from the right path of heaven and earth. As a merchant, you should adhere to the principle of honesty and be willing to do good deeds. Never lose your true self for the sake of profit. Otherwise, even with the talisman's protection, it will be difficult to avoid disasters."
Zhao Fu took the talisman and immediately felt a warm sensation in his palm. The runes on the talisman seemed like living things, faintly flickering with a mysterious aura. He carefully put the talisman close to his body and thanked the old man again, secretly vowing in his heart that he would follow the teachings.
Since that day, Zhao Fu wore the talisman on his chest wherever he went and never took it off. Strangely enough, from then on, his business trips became much smoother.
Once, he went to a strange town to sell tea. It was a place famous for its tea culture. He thought the competition would be extremely fierce. Unexpectedly, as soon as he set up his stall in the market, many customers were attracted. When those customers saw the tea on his stall, they couldn't stop praising it and immediately took out their money to buy it. Even several local wealthy merchants signed long-term supply contracts with him on the spot. Zhao Fu was overjoyed. He knew that although the tea was of good quality, its such popularity must be due to the talisman's secret help.
Another time, on his way, he encountered a sudden heavy rain. The rain was torrential, like the sky collapsing and the river pouring down. The road instantly became muddy, and many other merchant caravans were trapped on the way. Their goods were soaked by the rain, and they suffered heavy losses. However, Zhao Fu's carriage seemed to have an invisible barrier. The rain automatically slid off when it reached within one zhang around the carriage body, and the goods inside were safe and sound. He was also able to reach his destination smoothly.
As his business grew bigger and bigger, Zhao Fu's wealth also grew like a snowball. But he never forgot his original intention and always remembered the teachings of the Taoist priest. When doing business in every town, he always insisted on fair trade and never sold inferior goods as good ones. When he encountered poor people, he often generously donated money and goods to help them through difficulties. Gradually, he won an excellent reputation in the business community. Everyone knew there was an honest and kind Boss Zhao Fu.
As time passed slowly, Zhao Fu had changed from the young and inexperienced merchant at the beginning to a wealthy business tycoon. But in his heart, he was always grateful to the Taoist priest who gave him the talisman. Whenever it was quiet at night, he would always take out the talisman and gently stroke it, recalling that thrilling experience that had changed his life.
To express his gratitude for the protection of Taoism, Zhao Fu funded the renovation of a local Taoist temple. The temple had been in disrepair and dilapidated for a long time. Under his careful management, it regained its solemn and majestic appearance. He also often took his family to the temple to burn incense and pray, listen to the Taoist priests expounding the scriptures and discussing the Tao, allowing his children to also be bathed in the grace of Taoist culture. Moreover, he told his own story to those around him, allowing more people to understand the magic of Taoist talismans and the profoundness of Taoist thought.
Under the influence of Zhao Fu, the local business atmosphere became more and more harmonious. Merchants followed his example and adhered to the principle of honest operation. The practice of being willing to do good deeds prevailed. And the story of the talisman escorting the merchant spread like wings among the various towns, becoming a much-talked-about anecdote after dinner, making Taoist culture deeply rooted in the folk, spreading and shining brightly.
Many years later, when later generations strolled on the still prosperous streets and heard this story, they could still feel the wisdom and perseverance of their ancestors and the endless power contained in Taoism from this ancient legend. It not only protected the fate of individuals but also nourished the social customs, allowing kindness and the right path to flow on in the long river of history.
