In the ancient times precipitated by long years, there was a quiet and peaceful village, like a pure land in the mortal world, gently embraced by green mountains and clear waters. An old man lived in the village, and everyone affectionately called him Old Man Wang. Old Man Wang had been diligent all his life, sweating profusely in the fields for most of his years. He poured his youth and enthusiasm into this land, raised his children, and witnessed the changes of the village.
However, time spares no one. As he grew older, Old Man Wang's body was like an oil lamp. Under the erosion of wind and rain, the oil was running out and the lamp was dying, becoming increasingly weak. The illness was like a leech clinging to his bones, and various diseases came one after another. Headaches and fevers were commonplace, his limbs often felt sore and weak, and on rainy days, his joints ached unbearably, making it difficult for him to fall asleep. His whole face was haggard, his eyes dull, and he walked unsteadily, losing his former vitality.
To cure his illness, Old Man Wang and his family visited all the nearby doctors and tasted all kinds of herbs. The medicine pot at home was smoking with bitter medicine from morning till night. But even so, his condition always relapsed and didn't improve. The whole family was worried sick but felt helpless.
One day, a wandering Taoist priest came to the village. The priest was dressed in a worn but clean and tidy Taoist robe, wearing a Hunyuan scarf on his head and holding a whisk in his hand, exuding an air of otherworldly elegance. He set up a stall under the old locust tree in the village, offering free lectures on the ways of health preservation, answering questions and doubts for the villagers, and incidentally mentioning some mysterious Taoist doctrines, attracting people to gather around and listen with great interest.
Wang Xiao'er, Old Man Wang's son, heard about this and his heart skipped a beat. Thinking that perhaps this Taoist priest could have a way to cure his father's illness, he quickly helped Old Man Wang to the old locust tree. The priest saw Old Man Wang walking unsteadily and looking haggard, and his eyes were full of pity.
After a conversation, Wang Xiao'er anxiously told the priest about his father's condition, his words full of helplessness and expectation. The priest nodded slightly, closed his eyes and meditated for a moment, then opened his eyes and said profoundly, "Your father's illness, I'm afraid, cannot be completely cured by ordinary medicine. It is caused by evil qi invading his body and the chaotic energy field of the house. These two factors have made his condition deteriorate."
Hearing this, Old Man Wang's family looked astonished and quickly asked the priest for a solution. The priest stroked his beard and said unhurriedly, "I can draw a House-Settling Talisman. This talisman condenses the righteous qi of heaven and earth and contains the spiritual power bestowed by the patriarch. It can not only drive away evil and strengthen the righteous, but also harmonize the energy field of the house. Hang it above the main hall of your house, and you will see results in a few days."
Old Man Wang's family seemed to see a glimmer of hope in the dark and were overjoyed. They thanked the priest repeatedly. The priest didn't say much and immediately asked Wang Xiao'er to prepare yellow paper, cinnabar, a wolf-hair brush and other things. Then, he washed his hands and burned incense, standing solemnly in front of the makeshift table. Seeing this scene, the surrounding villagers also quieted down spontaneously, holding their breath, for fear of disturbing this sacred ceremony.
The priest held the wolf-hair brush, dipped it fully in cinnabar, and murmured incantations. The incantations were low and mysterious, like a call from ancient times, communicating with the gods of heaven and earth. His wrist shook gently, and the runes on the yellow paper unfolded slowly like flowing clouds and running water. Each rune seemed to contain endless mysteries, dazzlingly red and emitting a solemn and murderous aura. Soon, a House-Settling Talisman was completed.
The priest handed the talisman to Wang Xiao'er and solemnly instructed, "Remember, this talisman must be hung at the hour of Chen when the yang qi is at its strongest. After hanging it, avoid seeing blood within three days and don't let filthy things defile it, otherwise its power will be damaged and all previous efforts will be wasted." Wang Xiao'er carefully took the talisman as if it were a rare treasure and thanked the priest again and again.
Back home, Wang Xiao'er did as he was told and hung the House-Settling Talisman above the main hall at the hour of Chen the next day. Strangely enough, as soon as the talisman was hung up, the originally slightly gloomy and oppressive room seemed to be instantly penetrated by a warm ray of sunlight. The haze was swept away, and the whole space was filled with a fresh and peaceful atmosphere.
In the afternoon of that day, Old Man Wang felt a little strange. His originally muddled and heavy head gradually became clear, and the headache that had plagued him for a long time was much relieved. He tried to get up and walk around and found that his limbs also seemed to have some strength and were no longer as weak as before. Seeing this, the family was both surprised and happy and became even more convinced of the magic of the House-Settling Talisman.
In the following days, Old Man Wang's body recovered more and more obviously. His complexion changed from the previous sallow and listless to gradually ruddy and shiny. His eyes regained their vitality, and he walked more steadily. He could even go to the yard to bask in the sun and help the family with some simple chores.
Hearing that Old Man Wang's condition had improved so rapidly, neighbors and relatives came to visit one after another. Old Man Wang excitedly told everyone about the magical effect of the House-Settling Talisman. His words were full of gratitude to the priest and awe of Taoism: "As soon as the talisman was hung up, I felt a mysterious force dispersing the illness qi from my body, and the house became stable and quiet. These days, I've been sleeping soundly every night, and naturally my body has slowly recovered. The magic of Taoism is really amazing!"
Listening to Old Man Wang's story and looking at his now radiant appearance, everyone was amazed and yearned for the House-Settling Talisman and the mysterious power of Taoism. Several young people in the village, who had been skeptical about such supernatural things, were completely convinced and pestered Wang Xiao'er to inquire about the whereabouts of the priest, thinking that if they had a headache or fever in the future, they would have a way to deal with it.
And the priest, after drawing the talisman for Old Man Wang, wandered off to other places. But the House-Settling Talisman he left behind and the Taoist culture it embodied were like a spark, igniting the villagers' enthusiasm for exploring the mysterious unknown in this small village. Since then, whenever there was something wrong in the villagers' homes or they were unwell, they would think of Old Man Wang's story and wonder if they should invite a Taoist priest to take a look and whether they needed a talisman to drive away evil and ensure safety.
As the years passed slowly, Old Man Wang spent many peaceful years under the protection of the House-Settling Talisman. He often taught the younger generation to revere heaven and earth, respect nature, and have a kind heart, because all the blessings in this world come from the invisible but omnipresent righteous qi and the protection of the gods. Just like the seemingly simple House-Settling Talisman, what it carried behind was the profound wisdom of Taoism in conforming to nature, harmonizing yin and yang, and driving away evil and strengthening the righteous. And this wisdom would be passed down from generation to generation with the passage of time, continuing on this land and becoming the eternal light of faith in people's hearts.
