In the southern part of the Chinese land, there was an area with rolling mountains and crisscrossing rivers. The natural scenery here was beautiful, but it also hid many dangers. A young scholar named Tingyun came from a poor family. However, with his own diligence and intelligence, he had achieved remarkable academic accomplishments and was eager to go to the capital for the imperial examinations, hoping to top the list and change the fate of his family.
One day, Tingyun was hurrying along the winding mountain path with a simple backpack. Initially, the sky was fairly clear. But in an instant, the dark clouds gathered rapidly like ink, piling up layer upon layer and lowering down, enveloping the whole world in gloom. Immediately after, a fierce wind howled, blowing the roadside trees askew, and the snapping sound of broken branches could be heard incessantly. Tingyun murmured to himself that something was wrong and quickened his pace, trying to find a shelter before the rain poured down.
However, before he could find a place to take refuge, the large raindrops, accompanied by the strong wind, lashed down like whips. The water level of the mountain stream rose sharply in an instant, and the surging water, carrying mud, sand and branches, rushed down turbulently and soon converged into a torrent, charging downhill with irresistible force. Tingyun was horrified to find that he was in a low-lying area and was already surrounded by the flood.
The floodwater rose higher and higher and soon reached above his knees. The icy cold water pounded his legs, making it almost impossible for him to stand firm. Tingyun looked around in panic, his eyes full of despair. The books he was tightly clutching in his hand were now wet from the rain, and the words on them were blurred. He knew full well that with such a violent flood, he was likely to lose his life here, and all his years of hard study and lofty aspirations would come to nothing.
Just when Tingyun was in utter despair, a figure flashed out like a ghost in the rain curtain. Looking closely, it was an old man in a Taoist robe. He had a thin face, but his eyes were bright and piercing, exuding an extraordinary and otherworldly temperament. The old man was holding a horsetail whisk in his hand. Although it was wet from the rain, it still emitted an ancient aura.
The old man strode up to Tingyun in a few steps. He looked calm and composed, as if the raging flood was just a trifle in his eyes. He slightly raised his hand to stop Tingyun's panic and said gently, "Young man, don't panic. Our encounter today is fate." After saying that, he slowly took out a talisman from his bosom and handed it to Tingyun, "This is the 'Talisman of Lu Dongbin for Crossing Disasters', which is transformed by the immortal power of Patriarch Lu. Wear it on your body, and it may keep you safe."
Hearing this, Tingyun was full of doubts in his heart. But looking at the old man's firm eyes and hearing that it was a talisman transformed by the immortal power of Lu Dongbin, his desire to survive made him take the talisman with trembling hands without thinking too much. The talisman was light yellow in color and felt as soft as silk. There were strange runes drawn on it with vermilion pigment. The runes seemed alive. Under the washing of the rain, they flickered faintly, revealing a mysterious and powerful force.
Tingyun obediently wore the talisman close to his body. At that very moment, he felt a warm current gushing out from the talisman and quickly spreading throughout his body, dispelling the cold and fear all around him. What was even more miraculous was that the originally surging and continuously rising flood seemed to be restrained by some powerful force and gradually receded. The water level dropped at a visible speed, and the surging water gradually calmed down. In just a moment, the flood retreated back to the original mountain stream, leaving only a messy ground behind, testifying to the thrilling disaster that had just occurred.
Tingyun stared blankly at the scene in front of him and it took him a long time to come to his senses. He realized that he had just experienced an incredible miracle, and all of this was due to the "Talisman of Lu Dongbin for Crossing Disasters" given by the mysterious old man. He quickly turned around, wanting to thank the old man, but found that the old man had already disappeared into the rain curtain, leaving only a sentence echoing in the mountains: "Take good care of yourself in the future and don't forget today's kindness."
Tingyun was grateful and set off on his way back home. Along the way, he repeatedly pondered over this strange encounter and was filled with awe for the mysterious power of Taoism. After returning home, he couldn't wait to tell his neighbors and fellow villagers about his experience. Everyone was amazed, and for a while, the story of the "Talisman of Lu Dongbin for Crossing Disasters" spread like wildfire in the village.
Tingyun knew full well the preciousness of this talisman. In order to give more people a glimmer of hope in times of danger, he decided to teach everyone the life-saving method of wearing the talisman. Every day, in the village ancestral hall, he told the villagers who gathered around about the thrilling scene that day, describing in detail the appearance of the talisman, the way to wear it, and his own true feelings in the crisis.
In order to help everyone better understand the spiritual connotations of Taoism, Tingyun also deliberately studied many Taoist classics. Drawing wisdom from the "Tao Te Ching", he explained to the villagers the principles of conforming to nature and respecting the gods. He said, "All things in the world have their own operating laws. Just like the flash flood, although it came with great fury, it was not without traces. We should conform to the trend of nature and have a heart full of awe. And the talisman of Patriarch Lu Dongbin is the divine power that protects us at critical moments."
Under his efforts, a trend of respecting Taoism culture gradually emerged in the village. Children sat around their elders, listening to this magical story, their eyes full of curiosity and longing; young and middle-aged people memorized the appearance of the talisman, hoping that when they went out to work or traveled far away, they could rely on this talisman to stay safe if they encountered danger; the elderly knelt down piously towards the east every morning, giving thanks for the protection of Patriarch Lu Dongbin and praying for good weather and the well-being of their families.
With the passage of time, the story of the "Talisman of Lu Dongbin for Crossing Disasters" spread farther and farther, and the surrounding villages and towns all heard about it. Many people came here admiringly to consult Tingyun about the practice methods of Taoism and the mysteries of the talisman. Tingyun never held back and answered them patiently one by one. He hoped to pass on the grace brought by Taoism to more people, so that everyone could find the bridge leading to peace in the tempests of life with faith and hope.
Many years later, when people mentioned this past event again, they would still be touched by the magical talisman, the mysterious old man, and Tingyun's grateful heart. That strange encounter in the flash flood was like a bright star, illuminating the path of people's exploration of Taoism culture, inspiring generation after generation to muster courage and hold fast to their beliefs when facing difficulties, and to pursue the mysterious protection and wisdom light of ancient Taoism. And Tingyun's hometown, due to this cultural inheritance, became a well-known place for inheriting Taoism culture. Every year, numerous believers came here on pilgrimages, feeling the tranquility and power that transcended time and space.
