In the mist-shrouded and serene Taoist temple, there lived two Taoist priests with distinct personalities yet a deep bond of friendship. One was named Xuan Feng, who had delicate features and an elegant temperament. He had an extraordinary talent and passion for the game of chess. Whenever he had free time, he would immerse himself in the wonderful world composed of black and white chess pieces, exploring the philosophies and wisdom of the world within the chessboard. The other was Xuan Ming, with deep and profound eyes and a calm expression. He was proficient in the Taoist art of fortune-telling and could perceive the mysteries and patterns of fate from the subtle changes of all things in the universe. His words often carried profound meanings that made people think deeply.
One day, the sunlight filtered through the dappled leaves and fell onto the courtyard of the Taoist temple, creating patterns of interlaced light and shadow. Xuan Ming and Xuan Feng sat facing each other at the stone table in the courtyard. Xuan Ming slightly raised his head, a mysterious glint in his eyes, and slowly said to Xuan Feng, "Brother, today let's play a game of chess. This chess game is no ordinary one. It harbors the mysteries of fortune within it. If you can gain some insights during the maneuvers on the chessboard, you will surely be blessed with wealth in the future. This is what I've perceived from observing the celestial phenomena and divining the fates recently. Let's see if you have such an opportunity." Hearing this, Xuan Feng's heart stirred slightly. He was well aware of Xuan Ming's accomplishments in the art of fortune-telling, so he nodded in agreement at once, with a look of expectation and concentration in his eyes.
Thus, they set up the chessboard, and a silent battle began. At the beginning of the game, Xuan Feng placed his chess pieces rapidly, attempting to gain the upper hand quickly with a fierce offensive. However, Xuan Ming remained unhurried and responded steadily. Each of his moves seemed plain and ordinary on the surface, but in fact, they held hidden subtleties, just like the Taoist concept of "governing by doing nothing" - seemingly doing nothing but quietly building a solid defense and dissolving Xuan Feng's attacks one after another.
Before long, Xuan Feng realized that he was in a difficult situation. His chess pieces were gradually restrained by Xuan Ming's layout, and the space for movement became smaller and smaller. Every move became extremely difficult. At this moment, Xuan Feng couldn't help but feel a bit anxious, and fine beads of sweat appeared on his forehead. But after all, he had been practicing in the Taoist temple for many years and knew well that impatience was a major taboo in cultivation and also a fatal flaw in a chess game. So, he took a deep breath and slowly closed his eyes, trying to calm his restless heart.
In this moment of tranquility, Xuan Feng's thoughts gradually emptied. He began to recall the Taoist classics he usually read. The teachings about the balance of yin and yang, the harmony of movement and stillness, and conforming to nature were like a clear spring flowing slowly into his heart. It was as if he saw all things in the universe operating orderly under the guidance of Tao, with birth, death, prosperity, and decline all following their own laws.
Xuan Feng opened his eyes, and there was more calmness and wisdom in his gaze now. He reexamined the chessboard and no longer blindly pursued offense. Instead, he began to focus on the coordination and cooperation among the chess pieces, using defense as a means of offense and advancing steadily. Each of his moves seemed to follow a certain natural rhythm, neither too fast nor too slow, just right.
As the game progressed, Xuan Feng gradually turned the situation around. His chess pieces were like lively dragons, moving freely on the chessboard and gradually breaking through Xuan Ming's defense, taking the initiative. Xuan Ming looked at Xuan Feng's transformation and a gratified smile appeared on his face. He knew that Xuan Feng had already grasped the true essence of Tao in the chess game.
Just as the chess game was coming to an end, a sound of footsteps came from outside the gate of the Taoist temple. A pilgrim, with a devout look on his face, walked into the temple, carrying a parcel in his hand. He walked straight up to Xuan Feng, bowed respectfully, and then said, "Reverend, recently, everything has been going smoothly in my family, and my business has been thriving. All this is because I once listened to the teachings of the reverends in the Taoist temple and perceived the compassion and wisdom of Taoism. Today, I've come specifically to donate a sum of money as a token of my gratitude. And I'd like this donation to be given to Reverend Xuan Feng for the renovation of the Taoist temple. I hope you won't decline it."
Xuan Feng was slightly stunned for a moment, and then a warm feeling welled up in his heart. He took the donation and was filled with mixed emotions. He looked at Xuan Ming, who smiled and nodded, saying, "Brother, this is the reward for your understanding of the profound meaning of Tao in the chess game. The gains and losses, advances and retreats in the chess game are just like the changes in opportunities in fortune. When you were in a difficult situation, you were able to calm down, follow the guidance of Tao, and adjust your strategy. Not only did you win the chess game, but you also unconsciously aligned with the trend of fortune. In the wisdom of Taoism, all things in the world are interconnected and influence each other. Although the chess game is small, it can reflect the great truths of life, and fortune is no exception."
Xuan Feng said with deep emotion, "What you said is absolutely right, brother. Today's chess game has made me deeply realize that when facing difficulties, we should not be deceived by appearances. Instead, we should, as advocated by Taoism, return to our original hearts, conform to nature, and respond with a peaceful mind. Only in this way can we seize opportunities in the ever-changing world, just as we seize the winning position in a chess game. This fortune doesn't come out of thin air. It comes naturally when we follow the path of Tao."
Since then, Xuan Feng has been more diligent in studying the game of chess and also delved deeper into Taoist classics, attempting to integrate the wisdom in chess with Taoist thoughts more perfectly. He often shared his insights with other Taoist priests in the temple and told the story of this "chess game of fortune", making everyone understand that whether it's a chess game, life, or fortune, none of them can do without the guidance of Tao.
After hearing Xuan Feng's story, the other Taoist priests in the temple also gained a deeper understanding and perception of Taoist thoughts. In their daily practice and life, they paid more attention to inner peace and the pursuit of Tao, hoping that, like Xuan Feng, they could, by virtue of their understanding of Tao, usher in their own opportunities and blessings inadvertently in this bustling world, so that the light of Taoist wisdom could be passed down from generation to generation and never be extinguished in this ancient Taoist temple.
