The long river of time flows slowly. Looking back on those past years full of changes and unrest, at that time, the whole country was in chaos, with flames of war raging everywhere. Various forces were engaged in separatist and chaotic battles, causing the people to suffer and leading to the displacement of countless families. On the vast land of China, there was a place called Anning Town. Although it was named "Anning" (meaning peace), it could hardly escape the doom of the times and was drawn into the center of the chaotic vortex.
Surrounded by mountains, Anning Town was originally a secluded paradise with beautiful mountains and clear waters, living in harmony with the outside world. The villagers here had lived and worked in peace and contentment for generations, following the simple lifestyle of working from sunrise to sunset. The fields were full of their hardworking figures, and the streets and alleys echoed with the innocent laughter of children. However, with the spread of the war, a thick haze also hung over Anning Town.
There was a highly respected old Taoist priest in the town, whose Taoist name was Qingxu. He had entered the Taoist path since childhood and had been practicing painstakingly in a deep mountain Taoist temple for dozens of years. He was extremely familiar with Taoist classics and had a deep understanding of the principles of yin and yang, and the mutual generation and restriction of the five elements. Moreover, he was compassionate and took it as his mission to save the world. One day, as usual, Taoist Qingxu was meditating and breathing in the spiritual energy of heaven and earth in the forest outside the town to seek the clarity of his state of mind and the improvement of his cultivation. Just when he was immersed in that ethereal state, a strange light suddenly flashed across the sky. Then, a shining talisman descended from the sky and slowly floated into his hands.
This talisman was extraordinary. Its texture was like ancient silk, yet it also had a metallic feel. It felt warm to the touch but emitted a faint coolness. On the talisman, the runes flickered. Those mysterious symbols seemed to contain the ultimate truth of the universe. They intertwined and flowed as if they had a life of their own, exuding a simple yet powerful aura. Seeing this, Taoist Qingxu was startled. He knew deep down that this must be a divine object bestowed by heaven, feeling the hardships of the common people, to protect the world through this calamity.
Holding this magical talisman, Taoist Qingxu hurried back to Anning Town. At this time, the town was in a state of panic. The villagers had heard that the war was intensifying in the distance and that natural disasters were rampant, resulting in poor harvests. Everyone was full of sorrow, and their eyes were filled with fear and confusion about the future. Standing in the town square, Taoist Qingxu solemnly rang the old bronze bell. The melodious sound of the bell spread to every corner of the town, and the villagers gathered around.
"Dear fellow villagers," Taoist Qingxu cleared his throat, and his voice was steady and powerful. "Nowadays, the world is in chaos, and disasters are rampant. It is truly a misfortune for the common people. But today, heaven has taken pity and bestowed this divine talisman, which can protect us from the encroachment of disasters." With that, he held up the talisman high. Under the sunlight, the talisman shone even more brightly, attracting exclamations from everyone.
"However," the old Taoist priest changed the topic, his eyes sweeping over the crowd, and said earnestly, "The spiritual power of this talisman needs to be paired with good intentions as a catalyst to achieve its maximum effect. Our Taoism takes kindness as its foundation and encourages people to do good. Only when everyone has a kind heart and performs good deeds can it complement the power of this divine talisman and jointly protect the peace of our homeland." After hearing this, the villagers nodded one after another, indicating that they would surely follow his teachings.
Subsequently, Taoist Qingxu used his magic power to transfer the spiritual power on the talisman onto ordinary yellow papers, making simple yet equally spiritually powerful talismans. He distributed them one by one to the surrounding villagers and carefully instructed them to wear them close to their bodies and never slack off for a moment.
Not long after distributing the talismans, disasters came one after another. First, a rare torrential rain poured down. The rain was extremely fierce, like the bursting of the Heavenly River. In a short time, the river water surged, and it seemed that the houses in the town were about to be submerged. The villagers were terrified and ran around shouting. However, miraculously, for those families wearing the talismans, it was as if there was an invisible barrier around their houses. The rain automatically diverted when it reached about one zhang away from the houses, and the interiors of the houses were not affected by the flood at all.
Immediately after that, the war spread to the periphery of Anning Town. A group of defeated and disorderly troops were like hungry wolves, looting everywhere. Wherever they went, there was chaos. When they came to Anning Town, however, they seemed to be blocked by a mysterious force. Their steps staggered, and their eyes were full of fear. It turned that it was the righteousness emanating from the talismans that made these people with evil intentions dare not approach even half a step. Hiding inside the houses, the villagers in the town witnessed all this through the cracks of the doors and were extremely grateful for the magical power of Taoism and the life-saving grace of Taoist Qingxu.
During these successive disaster tests, not only was Anning Town safe and sound, but also the villagers wearing the talismans had everything going smoothly at home. The crops in the fields, even in a year of disaster, still grew vigorously and had a bountiful harvest; the livestock raised at home were all fat and strong and seldom got sick. As time went by, the villagers' lives gradually became prosperous.
Seeing that the Taoist talismans were so miraculously effective and feeling grateful for the compassionate deeds of Taoist Qingxu, the villagers in Anning Town spontaneously began to believe in Taoism. They repaired the Taoist temple in the town and went there every day to burn incense and pray, study Taoist classics, follow the teachings of Taoism to cultivate their minds and bodies, and help each other among neighbors, creating an atmosphere of harmony. Under the influence of their elders, children also had a sense of awe for Taoism and often sat around in front of the Taoist temple, listening to the Taoist priests tell those ancient and philosophical stories.
In this way, relying on the protection of the heavenly talisman and the support of the Taoist faith, the villagers in Anning Town united as one and guarded their homeland, and finally survived that turbulent era safely. And this legendary story of "The Heavenly Talisman Protecting the People" was like a bright star, shining brightly in the night sky of the years, passing down from generation to generation and becoming a much-praised tale. It made the grace and wisdom of Taoism deeply rooted in this land, nourishing generation after generation.
Many years later, when the descendants of Anning Town looked back on this history, they could still feel the hardships and perseverance of their ancestors and the infinite power contained in Taoist culture from those ancient legends and the remaining Taoist temple buildings. What the talisman carried was not only the magical power to resist disasters, but also a longing for a better life, an adherence to the inherent goodness of human nature, and the ancient wisdom of harmonious coexistence between humans, heaven, and gods.
